May is one of the most beautiful months in Rushford. The bluffs turn green, the Root River comes alive with trout, and the community begins to shake off winter with clean-ups, markets, and local celebrations. Whether you’re a resident or a visitor passing through on the Root River State Trail, there’s plenty happening this month.

Memorial Day Memorial Day Ceremony — Rushford VFW Post 5905 & American Legion Post 94 Morning Ceremony with Breakfast & Lunch

The Rushford VFW Post 5905 and American Legion Post 94 hold their annual Memorial Day ceremonies to honor those who served. A breakfast is held at the American Legion beginning at 7:00 AM (free to veterans), followed by midday lunch featuring brats, burgers, and chicken at the Legion Hall.

May is prime time for trout fishing in Southeast Minnesota’s Driftless Area. The Root River and Rush Creek run right through Rushford, offering exceptional access for brown, rainbow, and native brook trout. No boat needed — wade-fishing from public access points.

🚴 Root River State Trail Biking

The 42-mile paved trail runs through Rushford and is perfect for biking, walking, and in-line skating. Start at the Rushford Historic Depot trailhead on Elm Street. Note the Rushford–Houston section is closed until fall 2026 — ride east toward Peterson and Lanesboro instead.
